Oh, Colin. Ohcolinohcolinohcolin.
I think last week's episode would've made for a better finale, but this wasn't bad. And the Arthur/Merlin of this week sure felt finale-worthy, what with Arthur expressing his love for Merlin almost every scene:) But this episode also had all the bad of this season packed into one episode: No Morgana, Gwen being reduced to "the love intrest", Merlin not telling Arthur ANYTHING, and Gaius giving stupid advice again.
The Great Dragon
So, for two seasons the Dragon kept telling Merlin that Arthur will be a great king and him and Merlin will rule a great kingdom and everything will be great, and now he's attacking both Merlin and Arthur? Yeah, that makes sense. NOT. But I'm glad he's still alive, I wonder what the writers are going to with him now.
Nuh-uh, he's not dead. Even though the dragon crisp-fried all the knights that went with Merlin and Arthur. Maybe he got ill and couldn't come! It could happen!
WHAT DID THEY DO TO MY LOVELY GWEN?! She only had one thought this episode: ARTHUR. Merlin and Morgana apparently don't matter to her at all. And bleh, I hate it when all of the scenes of one couple are them talking about their love and how it can't be but oh, their love*intens stare*! FIND A WAY FOR THEM TO INTERACT LIKE ADU
Arthur: What is it?
Arthur: It's something. Tell me.
Arthur: All right, I know I'm a prince, so we can't be friends. But if I wasn't a prince...
Arthur: Well...then we'd probably get on.
Arthur: Are you missing Gaius?
Merlin: Something like that.
Arthur: Well, what is it then?! *throws a pillow*
Merlin: All right, I'll tell you! *long silence* I'm worried about everyone back in Camelot, I hope they're all right.
Arthur: So do I.
Arthur in his DREAMS: Mmmerlin...
Arthur: I always thought silence would be a blessing with you, but I find it just as irritating. You're a riddle, Merlin.
Merlin: A riddle?
Arthur: Yes. I've gotten t quite like you!
Arthur: And now I realize you're not as big a fool as you look.
Merlin: Yeah, I feel the same. Now I realise you're not as arrogant as you sound.
Arthur: You still think I'm arrogant.
Merlin: No! More...supercilious.
Arthur: That's a big word, Merlin! Sure you know what it means?
Arthur: Very good!
Arthur: It doesn't quite mean that.
Merlin: No, these are other things you are!
Arthur: Hang on.
Merlin: Overbearing. Very overbearing.
Merlin: You wanted me to talk!
Arthur: look on the bright side, Merlin! Chances are you're not going to have to clean this again.
Merlin: You must be careful today. Do not force the batlle.
Arthur: Yes, sire!
Arthur: Merlin, if I die, please...
Arthur: ...The dragonlord today. I saw you.
Arthur: One thing I tell all my young knights: No man is worth your tears.
Merlin: yeah...you're certainly not!
HAHA SERIOUSLY? NO MAN IS WORTH YOUR TEARS? That is not something that's often said to a straight man!
Arthur: What are you doing?
Merlin: I'm coming with you!
Arthur: Merlin, chances are I'm going to die!
Merlin: Yeah, you probably would if I wasn't there!
Merlin: Do you know how many times I've had to save your Royal Backside?
Arthur: Well, at least you've got your sense of humour back!
Arthur: Are you really going to face this dragon with me?
Merlin: I'm not gonna sit here and watch! I know it's hard for you to understand how I feel, but...I care a hell of a lot about that armour. I'm not gonna let you mess it up.
Merlin's facial expressions (and a bit of Merlin/Balinor)
Balinor: Hunith? She's still alive?
Merlin: Yes...she's my mother.
Balinor. She married. That's good.
Merlin: She never married. I'm your son.
Balinor: I don't know what it is to have a son.
Merlin: Or I a father!
LOOK AT THAT FACE. HE JUST KILLS ME HERE.

To be honest: unlike last year, I'm kinda glad this season is over.
Not that I didn't like it or that I'm not counting the days until S3, but this season could've been so much better at times. With Team Morgana & Morgause, there's the potential for some AMAZING dynamics and storytelling for every single character, but that won't be fulfilled if the writers just continue doing the same thing and making the same mistakes. So I hope they take some time to look back at what worked and what didn't this season.
But what NEEDS to happen:
- Arthur needs to find out about Merlin's magic. Preferably in the first five minutes of the first episode of S3. It's gotten really frustrating to have Arthur either conveniently knocked out or too stupid to notice Merlin doing magic.
- Actual screentime for Gwen and Morgana. Gwen needs to regulary have scenes that have nothing to do with Arthur, and her and Arthur need to be able to interact in a non-romantic way every now and then. Morgana needs to be less passive, and needs to matter to the other characters. These things could all be combined by letting Morgana and Gwen have a long, honest heart-to-heart!
but more importantly: unlike last year, there will be no black hole on my British TV-shedule. There's two Doctor Who-weeks coming right up, in january Being Human and Skins return and after those seasons are finished, the new season of DW will be about to start. Yay!
